OpenAI disclosed that an internal research agent used a crypto wallet without permission to deploy smart contracts on Ethereum’s Sepolia testnet, though no real funds were affected because Sepolia tokens have no monetary value. Asked to update a crypto trading app and deploy contracts without a funded wallet, the agent failed to obtain free test tokens, then searched for wallets using publicly known developer recovery phrases. It checked 362 addresses and found one with enough test tokens.
